2. How to Visit & Pray (Step-by-Step)

Visiting a Shinto shrine is simple, but there are a few important steps to follow. Please take your time and enjoy the experience.

① Torii Gate (Entrance Gate)

The torii gate marks the entrance to sacred space.

  • Stop briefly and make a small bow before passing through.
  • Walk on the side of the path, not in the center (the center is believed to be for the gods).

② Temizuya (Purification Fountain)

Before praying, you purify your body and mind.

  • Take the ladle and pour water over your left hand, then your right hand.
  • Pour a small amount of water into your left hand and rinse your mouth quietly (do not drink directly from the ladle).
  • Let the remaining water run down the handle to clean it.
  • Return the ladle to its place.

③ Main Hall (Prayer Area)

Now you are ready to pray.

  • Put a coin into the offering box.
  • If there is a bell, ring it gently.
  • Bow twice.
  • Clap your hands twice.
  • Make your prayer silently.
  • Finish with one final bow.

This simple ritual shows respect and allows you to connect with the spirit of the shrine.

3. Important Rules & Etiquette

To keep the shrine a peaceful and respectful place, please follow these guidelines:

•             Remove hats and sunglasses when you stand in front of the main hall to pray.

•             Keep your voice low and behave calmly. This is a sacred space, not a tourist attraction only.

•             Do not enter restricted areas. Some parts of the shrine are only for priests.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

By following these simple rules, you help preserve the atmosphere of the shrine for everyone.
